Hey everyone, welcome back to the blog! If you have been following the WNBA postseason action, you already know things are getting intensely exciting. We are currently right in the middle of a massive championship showdown, and the latest update from the court has got everyone talking. Let’s dive right into what went down in Game 5 and how one team is now just a single win away from hoisting the ultimate trophy.
If you missed the matchup on Monday, the Golden State Valkyries put on a defensive masterclass against the Atlanta Dream. Playing in front of their home crowd, the Valkyries pulled off a hard-fought 64-55 victory. With this win, Golden State now holds a 3-2 advantage in the best-of-seven series, putting them right on the absolute brink of capturing their very first WNBA title. How wild is that for a franchise in just its second season?
Defense Wins Championships
If there is one big takeaway from this game, it is that defense truly rules the court. The Valkyries completely suffocated Atlanta’s offense from the opening tip to the final buzzer, holding the Dream to a miserable season-low of just 55 points. Atlanta struggled to find any rhythm all night, shooting a rough 19-of-65 from the floor, which translated to a freezing 29 percent shooting rate.
After the game, Kiah Stokes pointed out that locking down opponents has been their identity all year long. “That has just been our staple all season. We really rely on our defence,” Stokes shared with the crowd. “They are tough. We have to make sure we’re all doing our part. It’s a team for a reason.”
Stokes wasn’t just talking the talk; she was walking the walk on the defensive end, too. She racked up a game-high four blocked shots. In fact, if you look at the numbers, Stokes has been an absolute wall in this series, recording at least three blocks in every single finals game.
Standout Performances on the Court
While the defense set the tone, Golden State also got some crucial scoring contributions when they needed them most. Kiah Stokes and Veronica Burton both stepped up in a massive way, each pouring in 13 points to lead the charge for the Valkyries. But they didn’t stop there—Stokes and Burton also crashed the boards hard, pulling down a team-best eight rebounds each.
The supporting cast chipped in heavily as well. Tiffany Hayes and reserve player Cecilia Zandalasini each added another 12 points to the scoreboard, giving Golden State the balanced offensive push required to keep Atlanta at arm’s length.
On the other side of the ball, the Atlanta Dream tried their best to keep pace. Rhyne Howard led the scoring charge for Atlanta with a game-high 20 points, while teammate Jordin Canada contributed 12 points. However, it simply wasn’t enough to break through the impenetrable Golden State defense.
Containing Angel Reese
One of the biggest storylines heading into this series has been the presence of Atlanta star Angel Reese. The Valkyries knew they had to key in on her if they wanted to secure a victory, and their game plan worked to perfection.
Golden State managed to stifle Reese completely, holding her to just seven points. She had a tough time finding her shooting touch, going 2-of-8 from the field. Even though Reese still managed to impact the game by grabbing a game-high 15 rebounds, the Valkyries’ defense successfully kept her from taking over the scoring column.
One Step Away From History
The atmosphere inside the arena—which is also the home court of the NBA’s Golden State Warriors—has been electric throughout the entire run. The fans have really embraced the team, and the players definitely feel the love. Right after the final buzzer sounded, an ecstatic Stokes grabbed a microphone and shouted to the cheering fans, “You all are amazing! We couldn’t do this without you all.”
Even though the Valkyries are just one win away from the championship, the job is far from finished. The series now shifts back to Atlanta for Game 6 on Thursday, where the Dream will be fighting desperately to protect their home court and force a decisive Game 7.
Stokes summed up the team’s current mindset perfectly after the emotional win: “We’re not done yet. We’ve got one more. We need two hoops, 94 feet and each other and that’s all we need.”
What an incredible run this has been for Golden State. Can they close it out on Thursday, or will Atlanta force a Game 7 showdown? Drop your thoughts in the comments below, and stay tuned to the blog for all the latest updates on the WNBA Finals as they happen!
